Veterans

Veterans come to Townsend to receive the help they so richly deserve. We help them make their dreams come true by teaching the academic, life skills, and work habits necessary to learn and earn a living. They overcome learning challenges and get a fresh start towards a future brimming with possibilities whether it’s a better job or higher education.

How will Veterans benefit from Townsend?

In Learning Skills they will:
• Recognize their own barriers to learning and take
advantage of state-of-the-art tools to remedy them.
• Determine their personal learning style and optimal ways of
      learning.
• Experience the removal of self doubts and bad habits in
      learning.
• Work with adult learning specialists who pinpoint their
needs and offer specific, individualized help in a non-
      threatening and entertaining way.
• Set and achieve academic goals.
• Use word processing, database, presentation and
spreadsheet software in an educational and work
      setting.
• Achieve personal success and confidence.

In Return-to-Work they will experience:
• A unique classroom that duplicates an authentic work
environment where students interact and solve problems
      as work colleagues.
• State-of the-art computer training on Microsoft Windows,
Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint and other business
      applications.
• Complete coverage of the universal skills identified by the
Department of Labor’s Secretary’s Commission on
      Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS).
• A strong emphasis on "soft skills" including interpersonal
communication, teamwork and problem solving that are
      critical in today’s business environment.
• Intensive personalized instruction and small class sizes.
• Community based volunteer placement, in which students
experience working in a real office environment.
